Food allergies are common, but how can someone be sure a reaction to veal is an allergic reaction? Knowing the signs can potentially save a life.
Veal is meat produced from a very young calf. While meat allergies are fairly uncommon, some people are in fact allergic to meat, like veal, and it should be avoided altogether. Veal allergy symptoms will come from someone consuming veal, not from simply being around it or inhaling the smell of veal. Food allergies are common and while most are mild, some can be fatal. Knowing the symptoms of a food allergy and when to seek medical treatment can very well save someone's life. Upset StomachAn upset stomach is one of the most common symptoms of a veal allergy. Since the food is consumed, in most cases some stomach problems will occur. One may just experience some mild nausea, but others may experience vomiting or diarrhea. Both vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate the body. There are over the counter remedies, like Pepto Bismol, that can help ease the stomach. ItchingIt's common for the eyes, throat and roof of the mouth to itch from this type of allergic reaction. If this symptom occurs medical attention should be sought. It's possible the itching can be caused by swelling and if swelling of the face continues, it could easily restrict airways, making it impossible to breathe. Skin RashSkin rashes can be mild or severe. In mild cases one may see a rash that's pink in color, itchy, and hot to the touch. Sometimes a slight swelling may occur as well. An over the counter Hydrocortisone cream can be used to ease the itching until the rash disappears. In more severe cases, hives may appear. Hives is an outbreak of swollen pale red bumps on the skin. The bumps can also join together to form larger areas. Hives vary in size, they can be as small as a pencil eraser or as large as a dinner plate. They will last anywhere from hours to a day. They usually cause itching, but can also burn or sting. They will normally disappear on their own. Trying things like sleeping and working in a cool room, applying a cold wet compress to the infected area, and wearing loose fitting clothes can help manage any discomfort until they disappear. FlatulenceFlatulence is more commonly known as gas. With a veal allergy being a food allergy, it mostly will effect the digestive system. Gas will go away on its own, but can be uncomfortable and bloating may appear as well. There are over the counter medications, like GasX, Mylanta, and Maalox, that can relieve any discomfort. Trouble BreathingSomeone may find is difficult to breathe. They may have wheezing or other asthma-like symptoms. They may also feel a clogged nose. With any type of wheezing or breathing difficulties a doctor should be consulted to help prevent the symptoms from worsening. AnaphylaxisAnaphylaxis is an allergic reaction over the entire body. It's typically starts with swelling in the face and throat. This swelling will be severe and uncontrollable. Due to the swelling, the person's airways will constrict making it hard to breathe. Normally, this starts with wheezing and will have the person gasping for breathe in a matter of minutes. They will normally also experience a feeling of panic. Anaphylaxis will also cause the person's blood pressure to drop, putting them into anaphylactic shock. This condition will progress quickly (in a matter of minutes) and requires emergency medical treatment, otherwise Anaphylaxis can be fatal. References: Food Allergy Symptoms, Mayo Clinic Staff
