Symptoms of an Allgery or an Intolerance?

May 31, 2009 Emily Retherford

People argue whether a sugar allergy is an intolerance or an allergy. Either way, the symptoms are the same and can be very discomforting.

Most foods contain some kind of sugar so a sugar allergy can be devastating. Some people are only allergic to refined sugar while others are allergic to all sugars. Like with other food allergies, those with sugar allergies should avoid foods with sugar in them at all costs. Symptoms are normally mild and often referred to as an intolerance to sugar rather than an allergy.

Fatigue

Someone with a sugar allergy may feel tired at abnormal times during the day. They may feel winded or like they are unable to perform routine tasks. However, fatigue can be a symptom to a lot of things. Discontinuing the use of sugar may help to determine if that's the cause.

Restlessness

Someone experiencing restlessness may not be able to relax or sit still. Often referred to as being "hyper" from too much sugar, one may find themselves in a constant state of movement often followed suddenly by extreme fatigue.

Lack of Concentration

A sugar allergy may cause trouble thinking. One may find themselves unable to focus or think clearly. In order to make sure this symptom is related to a sugar allergy and not the cause of something else one can discontinue the use sugar and see if the symptom subsides. Talking to a doctor may help since lack of concentration can be the cause of other things, like depression.

Resistance to Insulin

When too much sugar is consumed it can cause the body to become resistant to insulin. Insulin is produced by beta cells that line the pancreas. It is then released into the blood. While insulin controls the body's metabolism. If the body becomes resistant to insulin it could result in weight gain or even diabetes.

Depression

A lot of people suffer from depression, which can be a sign of a sugar allergy. There are a lot of symptoms with depression including lack of concentration, insomnia, fatigue, loss of appetite, eating more than normal, feeling of worthlessness and loss of interest in activities. Some people may dread doing things that may not normally bother them.

Headaches

Headaches are a pain in the nerve endings around the brain. Headaches can be annoying, but easily treated with over the counter medication like Tylenol or Ibuprofen. In some cases the headache may be harder to treat or turn into a migraine. Migraines can be extremely painful and last for extended periods of time, so in this case a doctor may be able to prescribe something to help the pain.
