Some foods may cause allergy symptoms in those with a natural rubber latex allergy. Discover which foods put people with a latex allergy at risk for a reaction.

Although medical supplies are labeled with a warning if they contain latex, many foods are not labeled with a latex warning. Certain foods can pose a health risk to someone with a natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy, particularly if he has a history of severe reactions in the past.

Foods Touched by Powdered Latex Gloves

Some people who handle food wear powdered latex gloves. The powder in the gloves can be spread to the food. This powder is usually not visible. If someone with a latex allergy handles or eats this food, a reaction can result.

Food Packaging Containing Latex

Studies have shown that some foods are packaged in materials that contain latex. A report entitled “Latex in Food Packaging” in the September 2006 publication of Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture showed that one out of three tested food products contained latex allergens. Plants That Contain Proteins Found in Latex

Some plants contain the same proteins that are in natural rubber latex. According to a 2002 article in Nutrition Health Review: The Consumer’s Medical Journal entitled “Potential Dangers of Latex,” and an April 2007 article by C. Pereira et. al in Allergy entitled “Turnip and zucchini: new foods in the latex-fruit syndrome,” the following foods may produce a cross-reaction in those who suffer from a natural rubber latex allergy:

  • Bananas
  • Avocados
  • Kiwis
  • Plums
  • Peaches
  • Cherries
  • Apricots
  • Nectarines
  • Figs
  • Papayas
  • Mango
  • Passion Fruit
  • Tomatoes
  • Celery
  • Zucchini
  • Turnips
  • Potatoes
  • Chestnuts

Genetically Engineered Foods

Genetically engineered or genetically modified (GM) foods may be developed from genes of other foods, but ingredient lists may be unclear regarding the source of the gene. If a person who is allergic to latex eats a genetically modified food containing genes from foods listed above, an allergic reaction could result.

Food May be the Cause of Latex Allergy Symptoms

Someone who suffers from a latex allergy must be constantly mindful of hidden latex in the environment. People with a latex allergy who develop reactions without a known cause may discover that cross-contamination of foods or packaging or the proteins in certain foods may be causing the unwanted symptoms. People who tend to experience allergy symptoms when they eat the foods listed above may wish to see if allergy testing for latex might be helpful.
